Had a bit of free time recently, so I was able to get a few things done:
1)Got Atari Rebound working fairly easily, there were only a few new chips that needed to be simulated. Pretty fun pong variation.
2)Also hooked up audio to both games, although it's not perfect yet.
3) Finally I added rom loading support, we'll see if that gets used on any games in the future :)
adam - i don't know why your work isn't getting more attention. This is great! Have you forwarded any of your work to the mame team / would you be happy for them to include it?
ReplyDelete... last question: with relevant the schematics; would games like death race, man hunt, flying fortress, steeple chase, space race, gran trak et al be as possible to simulate as these two? Would you be interested in doing so.
I would be more than happy to donate towards such a cause.
This is the first news I check for every day now - thank you thank you thank you!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interest. Yes, if anyone wants to modify my code for inclusion in Mame they are free to do so. I'm sure it will eventually end up in Mame some day :)
All of those games could probably be included in DICE, however some of them have roms that would have to be dumped first. I'm interested in emulating at lease a couple of those, but it will probably be a while before I get around to it.
Mame does not support games that do not have a CPU. Pong was supported in Mame, but it was dropped.
ReplyDeleteMame has no interest in games such as pong.
Pong was dropped because it was an inaccurate and had little to do with the original circuits. There's no reason an accurate simulation of Pong can't be in MAME.
ReplyDelete> Mame has no interest in games such as pong.
ReplyDeleteYou're an idiot and have no idea what the hell you're talking about. MAME would welcome discrete games if they were done right.
I Think You Got a Good One Goin,

i'm pretty sure the MAME team won't include discrete circuit games is because of the potential copyright infringements since most, if not all of the game IS the discrete circuits. hence them dropping pong long ago...
ReplyDeleteMooglyguy's quote : "MAME would welcome discrete games if they were done right." hits the mark imo.
ReplyDeleteA couple years ago, a MAMEdev member was willing to look into adding preliminary support for one of the non-cpu games that does use proms. It was a Ramtek game...without any fancy graphics. No one had the logic schematics sheets of the game at the time and still the case to this day.
The games that do use roms or proms do have a better chance of possibility of being supported such as Ramtek Hockey (pong clone) or Ramtek Soccer (another pong clone) since Ramtek did use proms for their games made as early as in 1973. The main obstacles are:
a) finding pcb with proms and roms still in readable condition that can be backed up. Some pcbs have been dumped with some of the data proms readable and not readable and there are many more pcbs not even dumped yet.
b) finding logic schematics sheets. Few would have time to trace all the circuits on a pcb if schematics sheets couldn't be found. This was the case with the Ramtek game.
c) if pcb uses cutomized ics and no data sheets exist, chances are slim of emulating the game.
As for games that do not use roms or proms, hopefully some other solution can be done to support those games such as Atari Space Race, Midway Wheels, Midway TV Basketball, Digital Games Knock Out, etc.
Wow, am I excited to find out about this project.I grew up at the dawn of videogaming, and now 40, I find that the only thing missing from Mame, which would interest me, is the older B&W games, and so this project shows a lot of promise, and from now on, I'll be keeping an eye on it's progress.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the effort involved, and wish you good luck, but great work so far!
This sounds great,Can't wait to see Stunt Cycle working..:)
ReplyDeleteAny more news on it..?
Thanks for the great work Adam. Rebound was one of my favorite games an except for playing it at CA Extreme, I've not seen it since it disappeared from the arcades... Great to see an emulation of this great game. It would be great to add the KEE version called Spike...-Malcolm
ReplyDeleteexcellent news to know that those extreme oldies are not forgotten
ReplyDeleteAnybody still out there??? Just found this...hoping somehow it can be used to get an old Atari Game called Shark Jaws from the arcade to work!! Anyone know how? Please advise! bwestdpm@comcast.net
